The 1976 Skyline is dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Victor Cornelison — two special people who have befriended CWC editors for the past twenty-six years. They not only guided my journalistic endeavors, but allowed me to see a meaningful and practical aspect of women's "liberation. " Our friendship has added a dimension to my life which I will continue to value.
Karen Thatcher
"I dream 'd in a dream I saw a city invincible to the attacks of the whole of the rest of the earth,
I dreamed that was the new city of Friends,
Nothing was greater there than the quality of robust love, it led the rest.
It was seen every hour in the actions of the men of that city.
And in all their looks and words. "
Walt Whitman
Dr. Dumont Kenny, the eighth president of Colorado Women's College, semi-retired on January 1, 1976. Dr. Kenny entered the college at a time of instability and was subsequently faced with many serious decisions.
The question of becoming a co-educational institution confronted the college in 1970. The school again underwent a name change — this time from Temple Buell to Colorado Women's College. Finances multiplied problems, and the college was facegl by a potential merger with D.U. in the spring of 1976.
A natioe of New York, Dr. Kenny has attended Fordham University and the University of Chicago. His doctoral dissertation examined reorientation aspects of the occupation of Germany. He has lectured throughout the United States and abroad; having been invited by the U.S. Department of State to return to Germany to lecture in 1955.
Dr. Kenny has also been the president of York College
of The City University of New York, as well as of Queensborough Community College of The City University. He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and the New York Historical Society; receiving an award for outstanding achievement in the field of education from the Fordham College Alumni Association in 1966.
Dr. Kenny and his family will remain in Denver, continuing their support of the educational and cultural pursuits in the area. The Skyline staff would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their dedication to CWC, and wish them well in years to come.
"To Dumont Kenny, who has restored the historic identity of this unique college for women here in the Rockies — you have laid the foundation upon which to build. "

Marjorie Bell Chambers began her duties as president of Colorado Women's College on July 1, 1976. She has studied history and political science at the University of New Mexico, Cornell, and Mount Holyoke College.
Dr. Chambers has been actively involved in the New Mexico Women's Political Caucus, New Mexico Equal Rights Legislation Committee, League of Women Voters, National Organization for Women, and the Girl Scout Council.
In 1975, she was one of fourteen selected by the U.S. State Department and NATO for a study seminar and tour
of NA TO bases in Europe. She was a guest of the Soviet Women's Committee to study Soviet education and the position of women in the U.S.S.R., in 1973.
Dr. Chambers is presently the president of the American Association of University Women, as well as the Chairman of the Council of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos.
The Skyline staff welcomes Dr. Marjorie Chambers, the first woman to be elected president of Colorado Women's College, and offers their support for the ensuing years.

Karen Thatcher has the distinction of having edited the SkyUne for two years, 1975 and 1976. Although this "annual history" of CWC has been published each year since the first classes enrolled in 1909-1910, the first 65 yearbooks were each edited by a different student. But Karen was selected to serve for two years in this most important and demanding position. For this unusual achievement, I wish to offer my congratulations and also to tell a little about this remarkable young woman.
Karen came to CWC from her home in Leadville in the fall of 1972. That year she held a staff position on the yearbook and again in 1974, when she worked after school to help finish the final pages of the 1974 book. In 1975 and again this year, the responsibility has been hers. These
were not easy years to have the positions of both editor and business manager. A declining budget meant that every possible saving had to be made. Advertising was sold, patrons solicited and books sold to part-time students.
Four different photographers further complicated the job; but all expenses have been met and Karen leaves a small balance from advertising sales in the bank for Kim Bischoff and her staff next year. In addition to her two years as editor — Karen was a fine student. Elected Who's Who, honor student in her discipline, she was graduated cum laude. The week after her graduation, she was busy with a new job — not unlike the last — editing catalog descriptions for Climax Molybdenum Company.

f rcsljnjai? Week
SPURS' members, Soona Bhappu, Celeste Hicks and Sarah Mesmer were on hand to welcome new students at the airport. SPURS is the sophomore honor/service organization. Their first activity of each year is Freshman Orientation Week — planning activities from airport "pickup" to Talent Night.
Susie Waterman and friend seem prepared and ready to begin a new school year!
Two very tired SPURS' members, Debbie Hall and Celeste Hicks, take a break between arrivals of new students.
f Ifc Walk Out
Diane Feit, ASCWC treasurer and Carolyn Solano, ASCWC presi- dent, lead the procession of new students through the Colorado Women's College arch located in front of Treat Hall. This tradition goes back to the days when beanie- clad freshmen were forbidden to walk through the arch until they were led through by the senior class; when at that time they were allowed to remove their beanies and become official members of the college community. The essence of this tradi- tion remains, however, the freshmen no longer have to wear beanies upon their arrival.

"A friend may well be reckoned a masterpiece of nature. " [Ralph Waldo Emerson.]
The Rose Dinner, another traditional event was held on September 18, 1975. Each year upperclassmen are asked to be "big sisters" to the new students. A dinner is arranged so that one can sit down over a fine meal and get to know their "little sister".
The atmosphere is one of warmth and friendship; and, as a symbol of this friendship, a rose is presented to each new student by her "big sister".

Academic Convocation ceremonies were held this year on September 17, 1975 in Whatley Chapel. This gathering of the faculty from the various disciplines and our Senior Class is a tradition which marks the opening of the academic school year for the Colorado Women's College community.
The following quotations were taken from the Dean of Faculty, Dr. Harold A. Schofield' s speech to the graduating class.
"The truth is as varied as there are investigators." Pictured are Nancy Clegg and Audrei-Kairen.
"Remember, it is a game which you play. You cannot rely on yoar instructors to play it for you. What you will discover is that your instruc- tors are still playing it them- selves. Not only are they still playing it, but they do so with the same innocence and the same enthusiasm as you possess. "
Treat Hall
Treat Hall was designated as a historical landmark on October 4, 1975. The construction of the building began in 1889, but was not completed utnil 1909. Originally, it housed the entire college — classrooms, dormitories, chapel, library, dining hall, students, some faculty and the president and his family. The hall was named in honor of the first president. Jay Porter Treat, in 1930.
Dr. Turner begins the ceremony with the history of CWC.
A Historical Laijdiijark
E.D. White, of the Landmark Commission, j presents the plaque to Dr. Kenny.
Rev. Gretchen Bremermann reminisces about CWC when she attended.
The League of Women's Voters' representative speaks for the ERA Amendment, while Senator SchieffeUn (con), prepEires to debate.
Vibrations for Understanding: Dr. Mike McCarthy— pro- gram director, Sandy Jacquith, Charles Learch — founder, and Judge Robert FuUerton.
Many organizations bring additional perspectives to the campus. For example, Vibrations for Understanding sponsored a debate over the Equal Rights Amendment; while Union Board sponsored Jayne Baker Spain; and SPURS sponsored Parents' Weekend, providing the parents and students a special time to meet one another and view the activities on campus.
Jayne Baker Speun discusses the topic, "Is there life after CWC?"; as well as her recent trip to China.

Ct^ristn^as Activities
The Christmas activities at CWC consisted of singing the traditional "Messiah"' which involved the CWC and Air Force Academy choirs, [top left]. After the traditional Hanging of the Christmas Greens, the faculty had a party which they called the "Unhanging". Jim Glass illustrates the atmosphere of the party, [far right at top]. In the spirit of Christmas, Mrs. Kenny had an annual dessert for each dorm and the re-engagement students, [far right bottom]- To begin the Christmas spirit at CWC there was a decorating party in the Union. Carolyn Solano and Margaret Purcell prepared decorations for the tree, [bottom middle]. Ruth Anderson and Margaret Purcell straighten out the lights to put on the tree, [bottom left]; while Lynne Larsen, Laura Singleton, Stephanie Bischoff, and Beth Jandernoa, try to figure out how the lights go on the tree, [bottom right].
The most exciting event which comes to CWC, is that of the traditional Hanging of the Christmas Greens. December 5 and 6 marked the 1975 festivities with invited trustees and guests of students attending on the first evening and students with their dates on the second evening. The menu and entertainment were superb with the garland bearers highlighting the evening. This youthful tradition sets off the Christ- mas spirit for CWC.

Armed with posters urging the trustees to "save our school", students ready themselves to quietly remind them that it is a WOMEN'S college they want to continue.
Students are extremely pleased that CWC will remain as such — the merger vote being a vehement no. $550,000 had been raised
in the ten days following that decision, and a three year — $7 miUion csmipaign was off to a good start.

The Festival of the Mountain and Plain was an annual event held in the autumn between 1895 and 1899, in downtown Denver. A historical parade opened the event, with elaborate floats imported from the New Orleans' Mardi Gras. A Masker's Ball was held in Arlington Park-everyone donned in costume. The location has been changed to the CWC campus, the time changed to spring, and harvests are no longer displayed; but the communal essense of good food and music, friendly folk, and handicraft still remains

"We came here as women and we will most certainly leave as women — but as women with a keener appreciation of our own potential . . . We have travelled a long and sometimes rocky way these past four years and though we are indeed deserving of a rest, it will not do for us to betray the opportunities for experi- ence and exploration which we have had on this campus. We owe those who have given us so much a solid return on their investment — the chance to see what they have so painstakingly taught successfully put into action.
" ... Do not imagine yourself defeated before you have begun for the only real beginnings and endings are birth and death — all of life is a continuum which constantly offers new possibilities and perceptions— do not be satisfied with good when there is a chance for something better.
Thelma Ribnik, Melanie Rohman and Bobbi Rose smile at the

"... Finally, I would like to share with you what is probably the only piece of poetry my 17-year-old brother has every memorized in all his years on this earth . . .
7 saw a man pursuing the horizon, Round and round he ran. "Wait, " I said, "you cannot ..." "You Lie!" he cried. And ran on. '
Run on, my friends, the horizon awaits. "

"The paradox of commencements is that we necessarily mix joy with sadness^oy in having successfully completed four very important years — and sadness in that we are now to say good-bye to old friends and familiar surroundings. "
Dr. Dumont Kenny
"To the members of the graduating class — new doors of opportunity are opening for women in this historic year of 1976; marking Colorado's centennial and the nation's bicentennial. Walk through these doors and accept the challenge of being pioneers.
"... To the families — who have given of their substance, often at great sacrifice, to send their daughters to Colorado Women's College — spread the word among your friends that your investment in CWC was the best investment in the development of human talent that you ever made.
"... And once more to the graduating class — with whom I shall not have the opportunity to work as undergraduates. I want to share with you a quotation — for you to pull out of your memory whenever you falter. The words are John Foster's: 'Genius is the ability to light one's own fire. '
. . . Do it! And demonstrate for all to see that Colorado Women's College has made a difference in your lives, and prepared you for leadership — in Colorado, the nation, and the world!"

"... (And) yet values, far from being peripheral concerns, are in fact, dominant, driving variables in all human systems, whether technological or social." — Hazel Henderson
Terri Champion and Helen Alig smile about the newly acquired diplomas.
"Sigmund Freud, Norman 0. Brown, and Ernest Becker have all emphasized that we are the only animals on this planet cursed and blessed with self-awareness and the knowledge that we are going to die. In trying to avoid confrontation with death, meaninglessness and nothing- ness, we all try to write our own versions of "Kilroy Was Here" on each other, on events and on our surroundings. Such motivation may be basic to our condition, but at least we can unhook them from their more destructive forms of expression as competition and seeking power, identity and material display at the expense of others and our life- support system.
"Indeed, we are now learning that self-interest, if seen in a large enough time/space context, is now identical with group-interest, societal-interest and species-interest. My personal commitment, which I know most of us share, is to do what we can, to work wherever we are, in whatever institutions we find ourselves enmeshed, to seek out others and continue on the path to expanded awareness and the cultural mutation that now must come."
Hazel Henderson, Guest Speaker
Dean Russell with Anne Bunker and Nancy Clegg.
"... Turning to the need to expose the normative nature of economics, which still often parades as a "value-free" science, I propose that we expand the Council of Economic Advisors from its present three members to seven . . . " — Hazel Henderson

Hold Fast Your Dreams Hold fast your dreams! Within your heart Keep one still, secret spot Where dreams may go, And, sheltered so, May thrive and grow Where doubt and fear are not. O Keep a place apart. Within your heart. For little dreams to go!
Think still of lovely things that are not true. Let wish and magic work at will in you. Be sometimes blind to sorrow. Make believe! Forget the calm that lies In disillusioned eyes. Though we all know that we must die, Yet you and I May walk like gods and be Even now at home in immortality. We see so many ugly things — Deceits and wrongs and quarrelings; We know, alas! we know How quickly fade The color in the west, The bloom upon the flower. The bloom upon the breast And youth's blind hour. Yet keep within your heart A place apart
Where little dreams may go. May thrive and grow. Hold fast — hold fast your dreams! Louise DriscoU
